Heading Home Hwy 144.. 271.7 km of Wilderness

Highway 144, is a provincially maintained highway in the northern portion of the Canadian province of Ontario, linking the cities of Greater Sudbury and Timmins.

this collage shows you just how remote and narrow that highway 144 is...
the shoulders are too narrow to pull off of the road so there are emergency pull-offs about 20 kl apart...
there is only one gas station and restaurant half way up the highway...
when you leave town you make sure that you have a full tank of gas and some water...
a few nerve pills wont hurt that much either...
Penny and i always share driving this leg of the trip ....peter:)

The road looks to be in quite good condition, Peter, although there is not much of a shoulder for cyclists.
....peter:): this portion of the road had been resurfaced last year Ray... but parts of it are pretty rough... i have never seen a cyclists on this road in 40 years....petersmile

It looks a good and quiet road to drive along Peter. I'm pleased you were t taking these pictures whilst driving.
....peter:): the surface of the road is wide enough Chad... but there is nowhere to go in an emergency... Penny was driving... i would be nuts to drive and take pictures on this road... or any other for that fact....petersmile
Pristine Canada, the way I remember it as a child, Peter!
....peter:): we have a lot of wilderness here Ginnie... but this is a very isolated road....petersmile

At least it is very quiet, but you have to be careful not to drop off
....peter:): there is no chance to nod off Lisl... these were the straight parts of the road the curves come in multiples of 6 or 7....petersmile

The emptiness of it all amazes me
....peter:): there is enough traffic to keep you on your toes and an eye out for moose and bears... but it is pure wilderness....petersmile

I have been in Sudbury, Sault Ste Marie. I like the Canadian roads, one day I made a trip from Seattle to Quebec, backpack and Greyhound.... all alone...
I remember scenes like this you show in the collage, never get tired of it!!! I am glad I did not have to drive myself though, I like to look out of the window grin.....
....peter:): i was born in Sudbury when there was very little vegetation on the rocks around the city... they have since reforested what the mines had burned off with the sulfur dioxide over a hundred years...
i am sure that a Greyhound and backpacking would have been a wonderful way to see the country... i'm glad that you came through out great country....petersmile
I like your idea of narrow Peter. That road is quite wide for here!
....peter:): the road is wide enough for the traffic Bill.... it's just that there is nowhere to go if you are about to have an accident....petersmile

Looks like a well maintained road. If it is wilderness, you probably would have to keep a lookout for big animals.
....peter:): this portion of the road had just been resurfaced last year so it is in good shape Louis... there is plenty wildlife crossing the HWY... but a bear or moose could kill you if you hit them...
a moose's legs are are higher that the hood of a car so the body will go right through the windshield....pwrwesmile
Looks like a great road compared to here. My son's family drove to Ont from Seattle at the end of June and my brother and sis in law just drove to NB from Terrace BC. Both mentioned the Ont. highway and the Soo to Thunder Bay portion.
....peter:): the roadbed is wide enough for the large trucks Mary... but there is no shoulder to use in case of an oncoming accident... this part of the HWY had been refinished last year....petersmile
Sounds like one needs to be well prepared to travel this route Peter, the bottom right picture makes it look a road to tavel quite fast on but I guess there are speed limits as there is anywhere else.
....peter:): the roadbed itself id plenty wide Brian but there is no place to go if there is an accident or a moose on the road... the speed limit is 80 kl h but the traffic moves along at about 100... yes you have to be prepared for anything when traveling 250 kl in the wilderness....petersmile
However, doesn't look as though there'd be any traffic jams!
....peter:): there is light traffic on the road most of the time Tom... but if there is an accident you have to sit there for a long time before the wreckers get on the scene to clear the wreck....petersmile
Now that's a highway I'd be willing to learn driving for... smile
....peter:): you had better have learned to drive well before getting on this highway Sudipto... there are many very sharp curves on this road... and the lorries are big as wellgrin
....petersmile
I LOVE roads like this, Peter! I'll drive the entire length for you! smile
....peter:): i'm sure that you would love to drive these roads... i love the G force when i go through S curves without slowing down... which is the only place that the cops can't get their radar on you begore you hit the brakes...
drive the curves and slow down for the straight stretches....petersmile
