This is typical of Greek-style houses in the Mediterranean region. The living areas open out onto a courtyard lined with porticos-peristyles, with a pool a few centimetres deep in the middle, designed to collect rainwater, the impluvium. The overflow ran into a tank below, which in turn flowed out to clean the latrines. One room was enhanced in Roman times by two antae, corner pillasters at the end of the walls, decorated with Corinthian capitals.
