photoblog image "A Passage Through Time"

"A Passage Through Time"

The sculpture “A Passage Through Time” represents the natural resources, the industry, the workers, their families and the finished product, the paper.

A lumberjack, tending to his daily tasks, piles a cord of logs. This represents the strength and endurance of the community.

As time passes, the children, who are the future of the community, are shown at play.  The people reading the newspaper represent the families, the leisure and the fruit of our labour.

From the cord of logs at the beginning to the people reading a newspaper at the end, a sheet of paper flows through the time of the sculpture.  It creates the thread that has held the town together all of these years.  As it holds the community together, the paper is also the umbilical cord which ties the town to the world.

....peter:): it tells a good story Bill... and yes they are still producing paper in the mill....petersmile
I lived in one paper mill city, Saint John, and there is one across the strait near the NS side of the ferry. We smell it when we get south winds a few hours(or even half a day) before it rains.
....peter:): we are lucky here Mary... the mill is east of the town and we have prevailing winds... there are two towns about 60 miles out of Sudbury where i grew up... and you could smell the stink about two miles away....petersmile
What a fascinating idea.
....peter:): it tells a nice story of how the town was created Brian....petersmile
